Trio Music of Marilyn Shrude

Sampen & Shrude Trio | John Sampen, Marilyn Shrude, Maria Sampen

AMP Recordings is honored to welcome composer, pianist, teacher, and contemporary music advocate Marilyn Shrude as composer and featured artist. Several of her works are performed across a number AMP releases.

This digital EP features the Sampen & Shrude Trio performing two works composed by Shrude:

  • Notturno: In Memoriam Toru Takemitsu (1996) was written in memory of Toru Takemitsu, the contemporary Japanese composer who died in 1996, and whose music has always been a great source of inspiration for Dr. Shrude.
  • Within Silence (2012) celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of John Cage (2012) and Shrude’s meeting with György and Marta Kurtág in the same year.

Notturno: In Memoriam Toru Takemitsu:

“This piece is dark and mysterious with little harmonies and gestures that actually seem to echo the work of Takemitsu and I found it very beautiful and pensive”

— Daniel Coombs, Audiophile Audition

Within Silence:

“The violin and saxophone exchanged a haunting, swirling melody. Over sparse interjections by the piano, they wandered in and out of each other’s pitch and sonority. The overall effect was intoxicating.”

— Larry and Arlene Dunn, ClevelandClassical.com
